The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Division (HDOT) is proposing to realign Kamehameha Highway in the Vicinity of Laniakea Beach. Over time, the Kamehameha Highway Realignment Project has evolved into the Kamehameha Highway Drainage and Safety Improvements Project to prioritize pedestrian safety. HDOT prioritized safety as the project's primary objective in response to community outcry when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in August 2019. The current Project is referred to as the Kamehameha Highway Drainage and Safety Improvements, Vicinity of Laniakea Beach (MP 3.06 TO MP 3.54) Project.

The project consists of realigning Kamehameha Highway mauka roughly 80 feet from its current location from the Haleiwa side of Laniakea Stream Bridge (also historically known as Lauhulu Stream Bridge) to the Pupukea side of Kawailoa Beach Bridge.
